Pressure sores, also known as bedsores, are injuries to skin and underlying tissue resulting from prolonged pressure on the skin. They are often an indicator of failure to provide proper care. When an elderly person remains prone for long periods of time, he or she can develop these injuries. A recent nursing home pressure sores study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed more than one in 10 nursing home residents suffered from pressure sores, with an even higher rate of occurrence for new nursing home patients (less than 1 year in care).
